5 Reasons Why NY Is Happy Steve Lavin Is Coaching St. John's

1. Steve Lavin has a good coaching track record. He brings instant credibility and stability to the Johnnies, two things they've been sorely lacking. He's one of only 2 coaches to lead his team to 5 sweet 16s in 6 years. As the UCLA coach, he recruited NBA players like Trevor Ariza, Matt Barnes, Baron Davis & Jason Kapono.
2.He's a family man which brings added stability to the Johnnies. The last coach was also married, but there's something extra special about a basketball coach whose wife has a tattoo. That is a tattoo right?
3. Mary Ann Jarou. The wife. The actress. She had Lavin turn down jobs in small markets because she didn't want to live in a slow paced place. She likely inspired Lavin to jump at the St. John's opportunity.
4. I wonder if she'll be like Joumana Kidd and sit court side wearing dresses like this?
5. The better St. John's plays, the longer she stays. Go Johnnies Go!

Brittney's Block Party

6'8" Baylor Bears center Brittney Griner is a freshwoman phenom, a shot blocking sensation, and the most phsyically dominant college basketball player to emerge since Shaquille O'Neal entered LSU in 1990. There have been taller women in hoops, but never has a player of Brittney's size had such impressive footwork and agility. At 19, she dunks in games & intimidates with her size & skill. She's so powerful and quick that basketball writer Trey McCray calls her The Human Cheat Code.
She's in the midst of a record setting year with 218 blocks and counting. She's blocked 35 shots in 4 tournament games, already a record. The old record was 30 blocks over a span of 6 games by Duke's Alison Bales in 2006. Griner also set the single game record for blocks against Georgetown in the tournament. Her 14 blocked shots were more than the total baskets made by Georgetown (12). The Hoyas only managed 17% FG.
In the biggest game of her budding career, against Duke in the regional finals, Brittney hit the game winning shot. She narrowly missed her 3rd triple double of the year with 15 points, 11 boards & 9 blocked shots. Duke shot a season low 23%. Both of Griner's triple doubles featured points, rebounds & blocks.
Here's what a few basketball greats say about her game:
Nancy"Lady Magic" Leiberman: "Nobody can do what she can do. Not Cheryl Miller. Not Lisa Leslie. Not Candace Parker. She plays like a guy. It's a really beautiful thing to watch."
Cheryl Miller: She's got great hands, she's got great footwork, she's very fluid. She's not just going to take women's basketball to the next level, she could be the absolute savior of women's basketball. When she grows into her body, oh my God, are you kidding me?
UConn coach Geno Auriemma: "I think she's the most unique player in college basketball today. I don't think there's any one thing that you're gonna be able to do and say 'If we do this against Brittney Griner, then we'll be OK.' I don't think that exists."
Bill Russell publicly supported and encouraged Brittney after she punched an opponent who was playing dirty. He said, "I looked at the incident and I felt sad because that's the way we portray her, one moment out of a thousand moments. I know from experience that there were maybe 10 plays that led to what I was seeing on that film clip."
He added, "There are five billion people on the planet. Major league athletes all over the planet total less than 10,000 people. They are all freaks. That young lady should know that very few people, unless she lets them, can have any impact on her."
Cheryl Miller also spoke up for Brittney by saying,  "While I don't condone what she did, (I) understand it. I lived it. There is sometimes a different standard for people who are bigger and stronger. It's like the officials assume you should be able to absorb more contact."
Brittney's game in her words:
"It's not my goal to go out and change the game. I just feel like I'm adding to it."
"I think it'd be kind of funny to be 6'8" and not have any blocks at all. It's kind of like second nature. Just see the shot go up there and try to grab it or throw it out of bounds."

Griner meets her toughest foe to date this Sunday night when Connecticut brings their record 76 game winning streak to the Final 4 to face the Baylor Bears. UConn has won each game in their streak by double digits, including their 40 point win over Florida St. last night.
2 dominant forces on a collision course in Baylor's home state of Texas.
Can UConn outmatch the Human Cheat Code?

Erykah Does Dallas

What the - is going on in Dallas?
Dirk Nowitzki, fresh off the all-time jungle fever baby mama drama, just got his 2nd career triple double in a huge win against the Nuggets last night. 34 pts, 10 reb, 10 assists.
Jason Terry played with a broken face.
Caron & Dirk elevate & celebrate.
And there's more in Dallas to celebrate-
R&B queen Erykah Badu's new video "Window Seat"
where she strips down & blesses the Grassy Knoll with love.
Thank you Erykah.
Dallas never had it so good.

Serendipitous Hocus Pocus With Focus

 Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Happy 65th.
One of the most dominant point guards ever, one of the greatest Knicks of all time and arguably the most flamboyant & stylish dresser in NBA history, Frazier is a unique legend of style & zest for life.
2 time Champion, 7 time All-Defensive 1st Team, 7 time All-Star, 4 Time All-NBA 1st Team, 4 Time All-NBA 2nd Team. He lead Southern Illinois to the NIT Title in 1967 and was named tournament MVP. In Game 7 of his first NBA Finals appearance, he had 36 points, 19 assists & 7 boards on the way to the championship. He was the most dominant defensive point guard and one of the greatest all around guards of his era.
Frazier speaks on his game & the NBA in general
"When the game is on the line, I'm actually more relaxed. I like pressure. That's when my focus is unequivocally magnificent. More than anything, it's about confidence and positive thinking that develops over the course of your life even before your pro career."
"My thing was, I loved defense. Throughout grade school, high school and college, my coaches stressed defense. I said to myself, 'I'm gonna be the best goddamn defensive player I can be.' I mastered defense, man. The stance, the anticipation of the ball and what guys would do in certain situations."
"Everyone has a cadence, a rhythm. Like in life there is a rhythm. The motion of the ocean has a rhythm.  Most of the time, a guy is vulnerable going to his weak side and he does not protect the ball like he should. So there is an opening there. During the course of a game I would set a guy up for that. He's been comfortable with that particular move the entire game and now I go for the steal when it will have an impact on the outcome of the game.
"Most of the guys used hand checking. Almost everybody did it. I didn't do it because I used deception on defense. I didn't like guys to know where I was so I never put my hands on them."
On guarding Michael Jordan:
"No question, I'd shut him down.
Frazier was & is still known for his fashion sense, style & cool. He was nicknamed "Clyde" because he wore a hat similar to Warren Beatty's in the movie "Bonnie And Clyde". He wrote a book called "Rockin' Steady: A Guide To Basketball & Cool". He drove a Rolls Royce with his initials on the license plate around Manhattan and to all home games. He was popular in the clubs of Manhattan and with the finest women in New York.
Today he's the color analyst for the New York Knicks. While still stylish, he's a different man than the Clyde who cruised the nightlife of New York in the 70s. He describes the transition from being the toast of New York to becoming the real Walt Frazier:
"I remember Dave DeBusschere and (my other teammates) used to say that I would have the toughest transition to make going into retirement because of being Clyde and coming down from all that. It didn't happen right away and it wasn't easy. But I was fed up with New York and that scene, the nightclubs and the cars. I didn't want to vegetate as Clyde. I was searching for something. I didn't know what it was until I came here."
 Where is here?
St. Croix in the Virgin Islands.
After leaving the Knicks for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Frazier was relatively stranded in Cleveland and forced to find out who he really was. Upon retirement, he moved to St. Croix where he bought land & built homes. He survived the devastation of Hurricane Hugo in 1979 and rebuilt his property that had been destroyed. He bought more land and built more houses. Now he spends the better part of the NBA off season there designing, building and opening unique guest houses. He still gets dressed up when he's in NY, but when he's at home on the island he wears basic whites & baseball hats.
At age 65, Clyde is going strong, spending large parts of his time appreciating animals, cultivating plants, building homes & enjoying the fruits of his labor. And still being a vital part of the Knicks franchise, even in their time of transition. He went from Dishing and Swishing to Articulating and Devastating. Now he's Beasting and Feasting on the good life.
